Södra Cell Mörrum uses Teknosavo WoodSmart for Debarking Optimization

Swedish Södra Cell Mörrum mill ordered WoodSmart at the end of March 2023. The delivery included debarking optimization system for two debarking lines. One debarking line is typically used for hardwood (birch, aspen and beech) and the other is typically for softwood. WoodSmart includes five measurements for each line, and based on these measurements, the deicing conveyor speed, drum speed and drum gate position are controlled for optimized debarking results.

The equipment was delivered to the mill in June 2023 and installed right after the delivery. The capacity measurement was commissioned right after delivery because July and August were capacity reference periods using manual control.

The commissioning of the complete system was made in September and October 2023. During this time there was also training for the operators, maintenance personnel, and super-users. The training as well as documentation was in Swedish language. The take-over of the system was soon after this. After this, WoodSmart has been controlling and optimizing the debarking process basically 100% of the time. The results show increased capacity, smaller wood losses and chip bark content within the limit value specified in the contract.

The project key persons at Mörrum mill were Gert Svensson and Martin Skyvell. They have very positive comments about the project:”We have had a very good collaboration with Teknosavo during this project. They understood the needs of our specific mill and if changes appeared during the project, they were very collaborative in solving these. Teknosavo project team came well along with the Södra personal. Due to tight and reoccurring short meetings during installation and commissioning of the system we assured good progress in the project. Södra Cell Mörrum project team are satisfied with the outcome of this project so far and looking forward to continuing collaboration in the future.”

Södra Cell’s Martin Skyvell and Gert Svensson have been working with Teknosavo on debarking optimization project.

The project manager on Teknosavo’s side is Timo Alasuvanto. According to Timo, the co-operation has been going very well. The people at the mill have been very helpful and Timo has enjoyed working at the mill. Of course, the project has required flexibility from both parties because the work was performed during normal production. Only some stops were needed, mostly during the installation of the equipment. “During my stay at the mill, I felt like I was a Södra Cell employee, even though sometimes it was a bit difficult to understand the local Swedish dialect”, Timo said.

The project included a lot of work with the operators as they are the ones using WoodSmart. The operators have been satisfied with WoodSmart and do not have to manually follow the debarking process as intensively as before. They also said that because of more steady material flow, the number of stops has decreased.

The project continues with and service contract including remote work and service visits.

Teknosavo had delivered ChipSmart3D chip analyzer to Mörrum mill in 2016. The analyzer has been in operation since then. Annually it analyzes about 36 000 chip samples every year. This means an average of 4 samples every hour of the year. The results are chip size distribution (according to SCAN-CM 40:01), bark content, moisture, and brightness.

Södra Cell’s Mönsterås mill is also using WoodSmart and ChipSmart3D in their chip manufacturing process.

Teknosavo celebrated new venue

The opening ceremony of Teknosavo’s premises was finally celebrated last week. The different groups were widely represented from official representatives of the city of Savonlinna and customers to service providers. At the same time, our Agents around the world met and discussed the development of the industry and technology. The conclusion was – Teknosavo’s competitiveness is stronger than ever. The requirements of sustainable development drive the market, and Teknosavo’s tested solutions fit this perfectly.

The program of the opening ceremony event included speeches, classical music and good food. Many of the guests also visited the FiberLaboratory located next to Teknosavo. Visit there was also an interesting moment for many of the guests.

Metsä Fiber chose WoodSmart™ as a part of Kemi’s investments.

When complete, Metsä Group’s bioproduct factory in Kemi will be the most efficient wood processing plant in Europe. The new production facility has decided to invest in Teknosavo’s technology by choosing the WoodSmart™ measurement system for its factory. The solution enables precise monitoring of the wood debarking process, high-class purity of the material used in the process, and minimal raw wood loss. These factors are important for the customer because the investment has focused especially on material efficiency. WoodSmart™ increases the capacity of the debarking line reduces quality differences between work shifts and improves the work ergonomics of the line.

The Metsä Fiber factory coming to Kemi is the largest investment in the history of the Finnish forest industry. The factory operates completely without fossil fuels. Teknosavo’s WoodSmart™ brings significant energy savings to the factory, which strives for maximum energy efficiency. The modern bioproduct factory will be completed in the third quarter of 2023. It produces 1.5 million tons of pine and birch pulp per year.

Teknosavo signed a representative agreement in Indonesia

Sales of Teknosavo’s solutions are strengthened in Asia with Nordic Ventures Group starting as the company’s representative in Indonesia. Nordic Ventures Group’s long experience in solutions for the pulp industry offers Asian customers the opportunity to optimize the amount and quality of wood used in their production.

The cooperation was agreed upon at the PulPaper2022 trade fair in June. Hannu Hämäläinen of Teknosavo (center) is shaking hands with Pekka Hemmi from Nordic Ventures Group. The facilitator of the cooperation deal was Markku Hänninen (left), previous long time CEO of Andritz Oy and Kone Wood, and has personally known both already since over 40 years.

Teknosavo moved to new premises

Our office building was completed at the Technology Center in Noheva, Lypsynniemi, Savonlinna, according to schedule. In Noheva, we have more than a thousand square meters of business premises for production, testing and office use. Since the beginning of September we have been operating in the new premises.

We were looking forward to meeting our customers and partners in the new premises for a nice opening, but due to the coronavirus situation, we had to postpone the opening ceremonies of the office building to a time after corona. With these precautions we want to ensure the health of everyone and not endanger the activities of our customers, partners or our own staff.

The new opening date will be announced as soon as the time is confirmed.

Teknosavo’s construction project is progressing on schedule

Our new premises will be completed next autumn. The groundwork is now finished and both roof and wall elements will arrive this week. Their installation will begin immediately. This will give the building its final appearance within the next few weeks. The site is located on a stunning ridge which will give us soon the opportunity to admire the Finnish lake landscape while the technical functionality offered by the premises will fulfill the company’s future growth potential.

The foundation stone of Teknosavo’s new HQ was laid in Savonlinna

The provider of optimization solutions for the wood processing industry, Teknosavo, is building a new business premise in Savonlinna. At the same time the growing organization’s three separate offices will move under the one roof. The new office space of over 1,000 square meters in Noheva Technology Center will include Teknosavo’s production, testing and office facilities.

Teknosavo’s EUR 1.5 million construction investment is based on accelerating the company’s international growth. The operations of Teknosavo have expanded significantly in the last years. The location of the new facilities in the Technology Park provides an excellent product development and testing conditions for the company and a strong network of partners. A Fiber Laboratory and the research environment of the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences XAMK in the Noheva Technology Park played an important role in choosing the location. In the future, cooperation between the actors is expected to become even closer, both in terms of research and knowledge exchange.

The new premises are expected to be completed in July. However, the actual relocation is scheduled to the end of August, when the trial run of the building is expected to be completed. The foundation stone of the new building was laid in Savonlinna on Wednesday 8. At the bricklaying, the day’s newspaper, drawings of the building, Finnish white wine and an USB stick containing information on the history of Teknosavo were buried in a metal capsule into the foundations of the building.

Teknosavo Oy – Founded in 1988, Teknosavo from Savonlinna develops and manufactures high-quality technology to improve raw material processes and energy efficiency of the wood processing industry. Teknosavo’s technology reduces wood wastage by up to two-thirds, while also improving quality, energy efficiency and logistics. 85% of the company’s solution production is exported. The company has about 20 employees in Savonlinna.

Noheva – The technology park is one of Savonlinna’s flagship projects. The operating environment created over the last ten years is attractive to forest technology companies with the help of its R&D facilities and engineering education. The technology park currently employs a total of around 300 people, approximately 50 R&D personnel and about 100 engineering students.
The number is expected to increase in the coming years.

THE PROJECT OF NEW BUSINESS PREMISES GOING FORWARD

Teknosavo’s investment in new business premises is going forward, and 7th June an inspection was held in the plot between representatives of the city of Savonlinna and Teknosavo. The new premises will be located in Savonlinna Technology Park for high tech companies just beside the Lake Saimaa.

PLANS FOR NEW PREMISES

Teknosavo Oy is planning a major investment in business premises at Savonlinna Technology Park. On November 28th 2018, CEO Hannu Hämäläinen and Mayor of Savonlinna, Janne Laine signed a letter of intent concerning the construction project location on the land leased by the city. The construction project is planned to start in spring 2019.

The realization of the project still requires the receipt of an investment grant and a positive decision from the ELY Centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport, and the Environment) The construction investment of more than 1,000 m² is about EUR 1.5 million and, if realized, would increase the number of Teknosavo employees by about 20 people.

Teknosavo Pap-For 2018 in St Petersburg

The international Pap-For 2018 arena collected wood handling, paper, and packaging industries in one place. The Expoforum in St. Petersburg offered an excellent facility for the three-day event. In the Teknosavo booth, we were delighted to meet such interested professionals as well as students. There were plenty of operators from forest-, paper-, and packaging industries. The event showed that optimization systems are an essential part of wood processing also in Eastern Europe. We thank all visitors for interesting conversations.
